Saturday, October 18 8:30 am - 4:00 pm "Gettin Out of the Gutter" Pulaski Park 1419 West Blackhawk St | Chicago, IL
WEF’s Student and Young Professionals Committee (SYPC) is planning a "Gettin out of the Gutter" Community Service Project at WEFTEC.08 in Chicago, Illinois. WEF members will assist the community in the construction of rain gardens. Rain Gardens divert stormwater from entering into the wastewater collection system, thereby reducing the potential for CSO's and SSO's while also recharging the groundwater. The Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) has been identified as a community group with experience in building rain gardens. The Illinois WEA Student Activities Committee will take responsibility to maintain up keep of the gardens for the park. The SYPC will coordinate the project, recruit sponsorship, and most importantly provide "sweat equity" in the form of construction labor at the Rain Garden on Saturday at WEFTEC. The SYPC invites WEF members to participate in this project with the assistance of local college and university WEF Student Chapters. In addition, IWEA and CNT will actively promote community involvement as much as possible. With WEFTEC in the neighborhood, the SYPC will look to also include a "learning exhibit" at the project site to help educate the community about the water and sewer cycle. The Chicago Metropolitan Reclamation District of Great Chicago has volunteered to set-up their bench top Wastewater Treatment Plant display. The SYPC is looking to take the experience and energy from this project and will incorporate a community service project as an annual WEFTEC sponsored event. Bus transportation will be provided. Depart at 8:30 am from the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers at 301 East North Water Street.
Let us know if you can volunteer time on Saturday to participate in this project. Contact Dianne Crilley dcrilley@wef.org.
